This summer, like any other, we are spending a lot of time outdoors, but once the weather turns we’ll be right back inside. During those summer storms let’s take the time to revamp our home. So, when we hop back inside this fall, it’s as cozy and inviting as can be!
The biggest trend on the rise is designing with intention. Put thoughtfulness into your home to tailor it to the life you want to live. But if you are having trouble coming up with ideas for how to do just that, here are ten trends that might ignite the design fire in you:
1. Reading Rooms
If you enjoy lighting a candle, having a warm tea or coffee, and curling up with a good book, a reading room is a must! If you don’t have the space for a whole room, think about where you can put a nook, or how you can create the perfect atmosphere around your favourite chair. Adding a side table where you can place a candle and a coaster, plus a lamp behind it, is enough to take an armchair from simple to charming.
2. Leisure Spaces
Speaking of cozy spaces — we need leisure spaces! Whatever you like to do in your downtime, make sure you have a space for it. Whether it's watching a movie or playing board games with family, it's important to have a space where it is easy to set up. If you insist you want to have a weekly board game night, but you hide your board games away at the back of a closet in the basement, you are less likely to want to pull them out. Make your fun activities accessible.
3. Wellness-minded
On the topic of fun and feel-good, creating spaces for wellness purposes is also on the rise. You could have a place in your house to roll out a mat if you are into Yoga, or you could put a diffuser in a room to spread a calming scent. Anything that makes your shoulders drop their tension once you walk in the door is great to add to your home.
4. Colour is back, brown is the new neutral
We are done with white walls and it’s about time. We are breathing life back into spaces! If you aren’t feeling bold colours, switch to the latest warm neutral — brown. And it doesn’t have to be a wall. Warm up a room with a brown sofa or a rug with warm brown accents.
5. Precision is out, curves are in
Just as strong lines and black and white are out - curves are in. Softer lines are relaxing to the eyes and bring in more of the coziness some of these other trends have as well. This may be something as big as a sofa, chaise, or archway, or something small like a sidetable, art piece, or a rug. Think about which spaces in your home you want to relax in and what softness you can bring there.
6. Artisan and Sustainable
Handmade, artisan, and bespoke pieces are more popular than they have been in recent years. Upcycling for sustainability is becoming more and more popular, too. Alternative materials like cork are also seeing more use, as people are realizing once again there is no reason to limit themselves to what they deem as the current norm. Plus, it’s good for the environment!
7. Thoughtful Lighting
Also seeing a switch recently: lighting. Potlights may be reliable, but they aren’t a one-size fits all light. When you turn off the overhead light, the rest of the room shouldn’t be shrouded in darkness because you only have one other lamp in the room. And if you do - try to mix up your light fixtures! There is so much room to personalize when you use lamps, sconces, and unique fixtures.
8. Dark and Moody
From light to dark - let’s talk moody style. If you like a more regal and intimate ambience in your space, try darker colours on your walls. With a deeper shade, make sure you balance the darkness with colour and light. Don’t limit yourself to all darkness or else the room will be one note.
9. Victorian Era Details
Victorian style is a great example of an era that exemplified dark and moody elegance — and it’s having a comeback. You can add this style in your home with moulding and wood details, intricate art frames, and towers of books. It is perfect for when you want your home to feel cozy yet elevated.
10. Eclectic
If you are running far from the thought of dark, moody, and detailed, then you maybe want to go eclectic! It has brighter colours, mixed patterns, and is grounded in a palette that blends deep neutral tones with pops of colour. To make this style work for you, use it in spaces you want to have the most energy like kitchens, living spaces, or even backyards.
